| RETIREMENT HOME FOR HORSES @ MILL CREEK FARM (FL) From Mary and Peter Gregory, founders and operators: "(Camilla) was one of 12 horses seized by the SPCA from one location in Miami with the help of the Dade County Sheriff's Department. All were severely emaciated and had various health problems. We agreed to take two old mares who were considered unadoptable. They had no names. The first was a gray Paso Fino estimated to be around 25 years old. The second was a black Grade mare believed to be at least 23 years old. We named the first one Camilla and the second Contraband. Thankfully, the Brennan Equine Welfare Fund agreed to adopt Camilla and the monthly fee helps defray the expense of her maintenance. In addition, the Fund came to our rescue when we purchased 20 acres of adjoining land last December. This parcel has now been fenced, supplied with water and houses some happily grazing horses. We are so happy we acquired this land. We are now able to rotate our horses. Several of our pastures were severely affected by the droughts of 2006/7 and need major work to revitalize them." DAYS END FARM HORSE RESCUE (MD) From Susan J. Mitchell, Development Director: "Xcalibur, is an eight year old quarter horse stallion that was locked in a stall for more than a year six inches deep in his own feces and living next door to a mare. He came to Days End Farm Horse Rescue skeletal, coated in his own waste, suffering from parasitic infestation, with jagged, overgrown teeth and losing his entire coat from malnutrition. X-rays were needed to determine if his severely overgrown hoofs had cased internal leg damage too great for this horse to survive. Now in critical care treatment, Xcalibur has gained more than 240 pounds, rarely needs pain medicine for his sore legs and hooves, has been gelded, grown a new coat and blossomed with a steady stream of love and affection. Thanks in no small part to support from the Brennan Equine Welfare Fund, Days End has been a safe haven to more than 1,200 horses over the last 19 years. Skeletal, suffering, abandoned… each and every horse is welcomed with immediate medical care, food, fresh water, respect and tremendous love. Please accept a heartfelt thank you…your generosity directly enables us to intervene and give these noble creatures the second chance they so deserve." FRIENDS OF FERDINAND,INC. (IN) Submitted with gratitude by the board members of Friends of Ferdinand, Inc, Indianapolis, IN. "She’s an Angel…. Angel’s story is the story of many unwanted horses. In June of 2007, Friends of Ferdinand was approached by a woman about donating a horse. A few months earlier, this good Samaritan had seen Angel in a feedlot, recognized her beauty despite her emaciation, and had taken her home. Based on the beginnings of her recovery and her worn lip tattoo, she appeared to be a 7 year old thoroughbred ex-racer that was once loved and well cared for. The timing was right and we were able to accept Angel into our racehorse rehabilitation/adoption program. It was a surprise, however, when the veterinarian told us that her tattoo and teeth put her at 27 years. Angel was placed in a foster home in northern Indiana with a wonderful family, a small herd, and twenty acres of rolling pastures. Angel has thrived, and it is still hard to believe that she is as old as she is because she is a beautiful horse with no health issues and a sweet, trusting personality. Thanks to a support grant from the Brennan Equine Welfare Fund, Friends of Ferdinand has designated Angel as a permanent foster and will care for her until the end. She is our “poster child”, a reminder of why we do what we do, and why we do it so carefully. Not only will this grant provide for Angel, but it will also free up funds and allow us to provide opportunities to other at risk racehorses in need of new homes off the track." OLD FRIENDS (KY) Awad and Sunshine Forever are just two of the horses at Old Friends that are supported by Brennan Equine Welfare Fund. AWAD 1990, b,h. by Caveat-Dancer's Candy by Noble Dancer (GB) Lifetime: 70 Starts, 14 Wins Awad was a born winner—and he has the credentials to prove it. Of his 70 starts, he finished in the money 50 percent of the time, earning $3,270,131. His most prestigious wins include the 1993 Secretariat Stakes (G-1) and the 1995 Arlington Million (G-1), the latter giving trainer David Donk and jockey Eddie Maple their first million triumphs. Awad, set a new Arlington Million track record, running the 1-1/4 mile track in a blistering 1:58.69. That year also saw Awad win the Manhattan Handicap (G-1) and the Pan American Handicap (G-2). Awad fell short in his bid to win the Sword Dancer Invitational Handicap in 1995, losing to his Old Friend’s paddock mate, Kiri’s Clown. He bounced back in 1997, though, winning the Sword Dancer with Pat Day aboard in a record time of 2:23.20 for 1-1/2 miles. SUNSHINE FOREVER 1985 b, h, by Roberto—Outward Sunshine by Graustark Trained by John Veitch Lifetime: Starts 20; Wins 8 In 1988, the 3-year-old Darby Dan stallion Sunshine Forever won two prestigious graded stakes: The Hill Prince and the Lexington. But he was just getting started. Trained by John Veitch, who also trained the extraordinary Alydar, Sunshine Forever stepped up with victories in three grade 1s: the Turf Classic at Belmont, the Man O' War, and –in an impressive fight to the finish—the Budweiser International. A favorite in the Breeder's Cup Turf, he narrowly missed the win, coming second to Great Communicator. Nevertheless, he was honored as 1988's Eclipse winner for outstanding Turf Horse. The bay colt continued racing at 4, bringing his track earnings to over $2 million. He left racing in 1990 and eventually went to stand stud at Japan's Nitta Farm—the same farm where Ferdinand had stood. In late 2004, Old Friends returned Sunshine Forever and Creator to the U.S. HORSE FEATHERS EQUINE RESCUE (OK) "Mouse" was a miniature horse stallion that was abandoned in a field of cattle. After wandering onto a neighbor's property who called Horse Feathers Equine Rescue, the owner surrendered "Mouse". Upon arrival, he was gelded, wormed, bathed, and given a much needed hoof trim, and is now out with a herd of horses. He is receiving continuing hoof care and is under evaluation for his future. In the meantime, this spirited little guy is happy to be with other horses, and his little size doesn't matter to him...he is not afraid of the big horses and will chase and play with the 17-hand Thoroughbreds without a second thought! RYERSS FARM FOR AGED EQUINES (PA) Sarah is a Quarter Horse cross that was born in 1979 and stands at 14.3 hands. She was given the nickname of "Cookie Monster" by her former owner. Sarah is a former jumper and Dressage horse, and competed in many Hunter competitions. She was also a therapeutic riding horse prior to a leg injury. She has been a resident of Ryerss Farm since October, 2007 and is enjoying her permanent retirement among one of the larger groups of horses at the farm. She and her group are dominant horses at the fence, always looking for treats from the visitors. OLD FRIENDS (KY) There are many paddocks at Old Friends, as most of their "residents" are retired Thoroughbred stallions, who need separate paddocks for their safety and well-being. Brennan Equine Welfare Fund has granted funds to install a Varnan automatic paddock waterer in one of the paddocks. This ensures that each resident using this waterer has access to available, fresh water at all times...even in winter! These waterers are insulated, therefore making them very practical even in the coldest of winter temperatures. NEW HOPE RANCH (AZ) From Kayla Anderson, Director of New Hope Ranch: "Since our initial contact with {Brennan Equine Welfare Fund}, we have taken in a very special equine whom we call "Billy Yates". Billy was surrendered by his former owner who could no longer care for him. Due to neglect, he is underweight and inhibited by arthritis caused by many faithful years of service as a pick-up horse in the rodeo circuit. With your help, he is on his way to recovery and will soon be in search of a home with a loving, caring family wishing to make him a part of their forever family." |
